Thanks for stopping by! 😊 First, let me say dont mind the photos—I don’t have many of just me to choose from since I’m usually the one behind the camera. 📸 But hopefully, they still give you a little glimpse of who I am and what I’m all about. Let me share a bit about my journey and how Open Air Learning came to be. 🌿
My journey as an educator and mom is deeply intertwined with my role as a guide and advocate for my four boys, each of whom, like all children have their own unique gifts and challenges. Our home-learning adventure emerged as an opportunity to embrace a more adaptive and flexible approach to education, one that could meet their individual needs. As I navigated the complexities of different learning styles and strengths, I discovered that home learning offered a space where my boys could truly thrive. The freedom it provided, unbound by the constraints of conventional education, allowed me to nurture each of my boys’ unique abilities while providing the support they needed.
As an outdoors enthusiast and avid traveller, my husband Danny and I naturally wove experiential learning into our daily lives. 🌎 We used our time outdoors as pathways our boys could use to explore, create, and learn in ways that resonated deeply with them. These adventures weren’t about academics; they were about building confidence, fostering curiosity, and helping them connect with themselves and the world in meaningful ways. 🌟
The idea of experiential learning as a formal initiative has come up again and again over the years. Conversations with like-minded parents and educators often circled back to how children thrived when given the freedom to learn through play and exploration. Despite the pull to create formal opportunities, the timing never quite felt right with the demands of raising our family.
Everything shifted when I discovered worldschooling. ✈️ Embracing this philosophy of learning through travel, opportunity suddenly became so much larger. I began exploring the world alongside my two youngest boys. From jungle treks to cultural immersion, these experiences became transformational for our family. Watching them be able to master new challenges and seeing their curiosity ignite as they discovered new places and ideas inspired me to think bigger. The more we learned through hands-on adventures, the more convinced I became that all children deserved the opportunity to learn in such an impactful way.
In the summer of 2024, I brought this vision to life. Drawing on years of inspiration and personal experience, Open Air Learning Foundation took root. This nonprofit organization is the culmination of my passion for child-led, experimental based education and my belief that every child can thrive when given the tools, freedom, and environment to explore their potential. 💚 Open Air Learning is not just a program; it’s a reflection of my journey as a mom, educator, and dreamer who believes in the transformative power of experiential learning. 🌳✨
